Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1 the curriculum is taught around topics and themes. This ensures that learning is practical, meaningful and links together.   Classrooms are large so children have plenty of room for role play and practical activities.

Maths, English and Phonics are all taught as separate lessons to ensure children gain the skills needed to make the best possible progress, although we link English to our topics wherever possible.

The video below shows you which teachers are teaching in Year 1 in September 2020. Watch it to find out more about moving from Reception to Year 1.

We use a variety of book banded books, which reflect a range of real readers to capture the interest of our children and promote a love of reading.  In the Summer term, all children will complete a Phonics Screening Check as stated by the Government in order to establish if your child is using their phonics skills to read unknown words.

Regular newsletters and RM Unify pages detail what children are learning each half term.  Families also have opportunities to come into school to work with their children and learn more about our curriculum.

We plan our learning around the National Curriculum.  For Religious Education, we follow the Sandwell Sacre Syllabus.

Homework day is Friday.  Your child will receive Maths, Phonics, and Reading comprehension homework.

Learning challenges are at the heart of our topics during each term.
